Free Parking in Worcester: A Complete Visitor Guide
Planning a trip to Worcester is exciting, but sorting out where to park before you even arrive can take the shine off it a bit. The good news is that Worcester is actually one of the easier places to manage parking, especially if you know a few local tips (which we’ll share below 👇)
Is Free Parking Actually Possible in Worcester?
Honestly, yes, but you do need to be a little strategic about it. Worcester is designed to keep cars away from the very centre and make it more walkable, so genuinely free and central parking is on the limited side. That said, there are some really solid options if you know where to look.
Council Car Parks: Free After 9pm
One of the best-kept secrets for visitors is that Worcester City Council car parks are free between 9pm and 7am*, perfect if you're heading in for an evening out, a restaurant, or arriving late after a long journey. The main ones to know are:
- Croft Road Car Park – WR1 3NZ
- Tallow Hill Car Park – WR5 1BL
- Pitchcroft Car Park – WR2 2WD
- Clare Street Car Park – WR1 2AT
- Copenhagen Street Car Park - WR1 2HB
- Newport Street Car Park – WR1 3NG
All of these are well-placed for getting into the city on foot, and several are open 24 hours. During the day, charges at the more central ones start from around £2.20 for two hours — still pretty reasonable for a city-centre spot.
Worth noting: on Sundays, daytime charges apply in the usual way, with the free evening window kicking in from 9pm as normal.
*Always check the signs inside the car park when you arrive, as times and charges can change and it's better to be sure before you walk away from your car.

Don't Overlook This One: Waterworks Road Car Park FREE
If you're after parking that's completely free — no evening restrictions, no time limits to stress about — then Waterworks Road Car Park (WR1 3EZ) is well worth knowing about. It has 37 free spaces Worcester City Council and sits right alongside the beautiful Gheluvelt Park, Pitchcroft and the River Severn. It's a short walk into the city centre, but honestly it's a lovely approach on foot along the riverside. A real hidden gem that a lot of visitors simply don't know about.
On-Street Parking: Worth a Look
If you'd rather park on the street than in a car park, you can do so free of charge between 9pm and 7am in bays near the city centre. Daytime rates are around 60p per hour Free Parking Spots, which is genuinely cheap for a city. It's worth downloading the RingGo app before you set off, as it's used widely for parking across Worcester and saves you hunting for change.
Residential Streets: A Free Option with a Short Walk
If you don't mind a slightly longer stroll, free parking can often be found in residential streets a little further back from the city centre JustPark. Streets near White Ladies Walk and the areas south and east of the centre are worth a look. Just always check for any restriction signs, these can change and it's not worth the risk of a ticket.
Charging Your Electric Car in Worcester
If you're driving an EV, you'll be pleased to know Worcester has been investing seriously in charging infrastructure over the past couple of years.
The best spot in the city centre is St Martin's Gate Car Park (WR1 2BS), which has twelve charge points including six 50kW rapid chargers City of Worcester — so even if you're in a bit of a hurry, you won't be sitting around for hours. All twelve points are listed on Zap-Map and charge at a competitive rate of 25p per kWh. Yelp
If St Martin's Gate is busy, King Street Car Park and Tallow Hill Car Park are both great alternatives. King Street has four fast chargers Parkopedia, and Tallow Hill has twelve newer charge points at 45p per kWh. Free Parking Spots Importantly, all charge points across Worcester's council car parks are powered by green electricity from renewable source, a nice touch.
If you're staying in St John's, then you're in luck because one of the best EV charging hubs in the whole region is right on your doorstep. The University of Worcester Arena (Chequers Lane, WR2 5JN) has an impressive setup — four 50kW rapid chargers, nine 22kW dual AC posts and eighteen 7kW dual AC posts Parkopedia, all around the edge of the car park. That's a serious amount of charging capacity, which means you're very unlikely to turn up and find everything occupied. It's operated by Swarco E.Connect and is open to the public, so you don't need any university connection to use it. For guests staying nearby, it really couldn't be more convenient.
Over on the main St John's Campus at Henwick Grove, there are also BP Pulse charge points available, giving you yet another option if the Arena is particularly busy.
One thing worth knowing: residents living within a kilometre of any of the council's EV chargers can apply for a permit that allows free parking between 6pm and 8am while their vehicle charges City of Worcester. That's obviously more relevant for locals, but it's good to know the infrastructure is there and growing.
For a full, up-to-date map of every charging point in and around Worcester, Zap-Map (zap-map.com) is your best friend, it shows live availability too, which is really handy before you set off.
Blue Badge Holders
If you or someone in your group holds a blue badge, you can park free for up to three hours in all Worcester City Council car parks, as long as your time clock is displayed correctly on arrival. The charging points at St Martin's Gate are designed to accommodate the majority of electric vehicles currently available in the UK, so EV drivers with blue badges should be well catered for too.
A Few Practical Tips Before You Travel
- Get RingGo on your phone before you leave home — several of Worcester's council car parks are pay-by-app only, so it saves a lot of faff on arrival.
- Check your vehicle height — all council car parks have a 2.2 metre height restriction, so larger vans or high-roof vehicles will need to plan around this.
- Busy days fill up fast — if you're visiting during a festival, a farmers' market, or a race day at Worcester Racecourse, it's worth pre-booking a space through an app like JustPark. Private driveways and independent car parks often come in at £3–5 for the day and take the stress out of it completely.
